Can you install a used BMW DME?
Usually not without programming. A used BMW DME, ECU, ECM, PCM, or engine computer still contains the donor vehicle’s security identity, VIN-related data, coding, adaptations, and calibration. A supported clone transfers the required original data into a compatible donor so it can work with the existing BMW immobilizer system.
This is the normal replacement path when the original controller is present and its required memories remain readable—even when the DME no longer communicates in the vehicle.
How to find the correct replacement BMW DME
Shop by BMW year, model, and engine to find possible donors, then buy by the complete label. Car-Part.com lists recycler inventory under Computer Box, Engine, and marketplaces can be searched by the complete Siemens, Continental, or Bosch manufacturer number.

- Search by vehicle and manufacturer number.
- Choose a listing with a readable complete label.
- Match the manufacturer number, DME family, hardware revision or Index, and BMW number.
- Purchase the exact match and ship it with the original.
Match Bosch and Siemens numbers exactly
Siemens / Continental: Match the full 5WK or A2C number, DME family, hardware revision or Index, and BMW number.
Bosch: Match the complete Bosch number, controller family or hardware identity, and BMW number. In the pictured example, the Bosch number is 0 261 S14 562.
Similar connectors and cases do not make MS43, MS45, MSV70, MSD80, MSD81, MEVD17, MG1, EDC16, or EDC17 controllers interchangeable.

Common DME families include Siemens MS43, MS45, MSV70, MSV80, MSD80, and MSD81 plus Bosch MEVD17, selected MG1, EDC16, and EDC17 controllers.
Simple mail-in process

- Ship both modules to PCM Tuners, 367 N. Clarendon Ave., Unit 7, Scottdale, GA 30079.
- We read the original, preserve the backup, program and verify the donor, and return both modules with tracking.
Verified before return
Every completed donor is read back, power-cycled, and checked for bench communication. If our transferred data does not verify correctly, we repeat the cloning work at no charge. Typical bench turnaround is 1–3 business days after both modules arrive.
