Description
BMW DME / ECM engine computer cloning
Replacing a failed BMW engine computer with a used DME, ECU, ECM, or PCM? A used module still contains the donor vehicle’s immobilizer identity, VIN-related data, coding, adaptations, and calibration, so it is normally not plug-and-play. Send PCM Tuners your original BMW DME and an exact-match donor. We transfer the supported data so the cloned donor returns ready to install without dealer programming.
Choose the finished result
- Clone only — $299: Transfer the supported contents of the original DME to the matching donor.
- Clone + Stage 1 calibration — $499 total: Complete the clone and add a performance calibration for a mechanically healthy vehicle using compatible stock engine, turbocharger, fueling, and emissions hardware.
Tracked standard return shipping within the United States is included. Required bench, boot, BDM, or other direct-access work is included at the same price.
How to find the correct replacement BMW DME
The easiest path is to shop by vehicle, then buy by the complete label. Search using the BMW year, model, engine, and the manufacturer number printed on the original DME. A listing for “BMW 335i engine computer” or “BMW X5 ECU” may find the right type of part, but the vehicle description, connector shape, case, and seller fitment list are not enough by themselves.
- Write down the year, model, engine, and complete numbers from the original DME.
- Search Car-Part.com by vehicle and select Computer Box, Engine, or search a marketplace by the complete manufacturer number.
- Choose listings that show a readable complete label.
- Match the manufacturer number, DME family, and hardware revision or index. Confirm the BMW part number too.
- Purchase the exact match, order this service, and ship the original and donor together.
Recycler interchange systems are useful for finding possible donors, but an engine computer is not a body panel. For the highest odds of a successful clone, use the complete labels to make the final decision.
Match the donor numbers—not just the BMW model
Siemens / Continental: Match the complete 5WK or A2C manufacturer number, the DME family, and the hardware revision or Index. Confirm the BMW number as a secondary check. For the MS43 example in our guide, the direct target is 5WK90027 + DME MS43 + Index 09, with BMW number 7 551 615.
Bosch: Match the complete Bosch number, the controller family or hardware identity, and the BMW number. Keep every digit and letter together. For the pictured Bosch example, the manufacturer number is 0 261 S14 562 and the BMW number is 8 655 428-01.
Do not substitute MS42, MS43, MS45, MSV70, MSD80, MSD81, MEVD17, MG1, EDC16, or EDC17 units simply because the connectors or aluminum cases look alike. Read the illustrated BMW DME donor part-number matching guide before buying the donor.
Representative BMW DME, engine, and model coverage
Coverage is determined by the exact controller and hardware rather than the badge alone. Common supported paths include many BMW gasoline and diesel applications from the early 2000s through the first half of 2020.
| DME / ECU family | Typical BMW engines | Representative BMW applications |
|---|---|---|
| Siemens MS43 / MS45 | M54 inline-six | E46 325i and 330i, E39 525i and 530i, E53 X5 3.0i, E83 X3, E85/E86 Z4 |
| Siemens MSV70 / MSV80 | N51 / N52 inline-six | 128i, 325i, 328i, 330i, 525i, 528i, 530i, X3, X5, and Z4 applications |
| Siemens MSD80 / MSD81 and related | N54 / early N55 turbo inline-six | 135i, 335i, 535i, 1 Series M Coupe, X5, X6, and Z4 35i applications |
| Bosch MEVD17 family | N20 / N26 / N55 / selected S55 | 228i, 320i, 328i, 335i, 428i, 435i, 528i, 535i, X1, X3, X4, X5, X6, M2, M3, and M4 applications |

Common BMW chassis and search terms: E39, E46, E53, E60/E61, E70/E71, E82/E88, E90/E91/E92/E93, F10/F11, F15/F16, F22/F23, F25/F26, F30/F31, F32/F33/F36, F80/F82/F83, G01, G05, G20, and G30. Coverage depends on the exact DME hardware and production date, not the chassis code alone.
This list is representative rather than universal. Exact DME hardware, production date, engine, market, and security generation control the service path. Later locked or encrypted BMW MG1/MD1 units may require a separate unlock or replacement-programming service instead of this standard one-to-one clone.
How the BMW mail-in cloning service works
- Select Clone only or Clone + Stage 1 calibration, add it to the cart, and complete checkout.
- For Stage 1, enter the engine, fuel octane, and current modifications in the checkout order notes.
- Pack the original DME and exact-match donor so the modules cannot touch or slide. Include your order number, VIN, year, model, and engine.
- Ship both modules to:
PCM Tuners
367 N. Clarendon Ave., Unit 7
[YOUR ORDER NUMBER]
Scottdale, GA 30079 - We select the correct access method, preserve the original read, transfer the supported data, read the donor back, power-cycle it, and verify bench communication.
- We return both modules with tracking. Typical bench turnaround is 1–3 business days after arrival.
Bench, boot, and BDM access are included
Some BMW DMEs can be fully accessed through the external connector. Others require the case to be opened for boot, BDM, or another direct-memory method. You do not need to choose the method, and there is no ordinary open-case surcharge. Opened controllers are handled carefully and resealed before return.
When the original BMW DME does not communicate
A DME that will not communicate in the vehicle may still contain readable memory. Direct access can often recover the data needed for the clone. Severe electrical damage, corrosion, burned circuitry, corrupted memory, or previous failed programming can make a standard clone impossible. A mismatched or damaged donor can also prevent completion.
If the supplied controller family is not supported, the unperformed cloning service is refunded. If the original or donor is mismatched, damaged, previously altered, or physically unreadable, PCM Tuners retains $99 for evaluation and tracked standard US return shipping and refunds the balance. Extended recovery is never added without approval.
90-day clone verification guarantee
Every completed donor is read back, power-cycled, and checked for bench communication before shipment. If our transferred data does not verify correctly, we will repeat the cloning work at no charge. The guarantee covers PCM Tuners’ data-transfer work; it does not cover vehicle diagnosis, wiring faults, shipping damage, or hardware failure in either customer-supplied module.
Important limitations
- Cloning copies recoverable data; it does not diagnose the vehicle or repair failed electronics.
- The original DME must retain readable data for this standard one-to-one cloning service.
- A customer-supplied donor is checked for identification, programming, and bench communication, but its electronics are not remanufactured or given a hardware warranty.
- Stage 1 is for a mechanically healthy vehicle using compatible engine, turbocharger, fueling, and emissions hardware. It does not repair active faults or mechanical problems.
- No emissions defeat, CAS/key programming, transmission programming, unrelated module coding, or vehicle installation is bundled into this product.
