Description

Mercedes ECU / ECM engine computer cloning

Replacing a failed Mercedes-Benz engine computer with a used ECU or ECM? A used module normally contains another vehicle’s identity and drive-authorization data, so it is not plug-and-play. Send PCM Tuners your original engine computer and a matching donor. We transfer the supported VIN, immobilizer/FBS, coding, adaptation, and calibration data so the donor returns ready to install after a successful clone.

Choose the finished result

  • Clone only – $299: Transfer the supported contents of the original ECU to the matching donor.
  • Clone + Stage 1 calibration – $499 total: Complete the clone and add a performance calibration for a mechanically healthy vehicle using stock engine, turbo or supercharger, fueling, and emissions hardware.

Tracked standard US return shipping is included. Required bench, boot, or BDM access is included at the same price.

How to find the correct replacement ECU

The easiest path is to shop by vehicle, then verify by label. A search for "2009 Mercedes ML350 3.5 engine computer" may find the right type of part, but year, model, engine, connector shape, and seller fitment are not enough by themselves.

  1. Start with your Mercedes year, model, engine size, and VIN.
  2. Try Car-Part.com. Choose your vehicle and select Computer Box, Engine from the part list.
  3. Enter your ZIP code to find used engine computers at automotive recyclers near you. Local and regional yards often price these below large online marketplaces.
  4. Before paying, ask the recycler for a clear photograph of the complete donor label.
  5. Compare the donor label with the original ECU using the manufacturer-specific rules below.

Car-Part.com uses Car-Part and Hollander interchange information to help locate potentially interchangeable parts. Treat that result as a useful starting point-not final cloning approval. ECU hardware and manufacturer numbers still need to match.

Match the donor numbers-not just the vehicle

Bosch: Match the complete Mercedes-Benz A-number and the complete Bosch number exactly. Also confirm the controller family, such as ME9.7. Spaces do not matter; every digit does.

Siemens/Continental: Match the primary Mercedes-Benz A-number, any separate Mercedes hardware or HW number, the complete Siemens/Continental 5WK or A2C number, and the full controller subtype. For example, SIM271DE and SIM271KE are not interchangeable descriptions.

Delphi: Match every Mercedes-Benz A-number, the complete Delphi R-number or 28-series number, and the complete CRD family designation such as CRD2.xx or CRD3.xx.

Do not choose a donor from case appearance, connector shape, a broad "fits Mercedes" listing, or an engine description alone. Read the full Mercedes ECU part-number matching guide before buying.

Representative Mercedes ECU coverage

Coverage is determined by the controller family and exact hardware-not a model-year cutoff. Starting coverage includes the following commonly encountered families:

Controller family Common engines Representative applications
Bosch ME2.8 / ME2.8.1 M112 / M113 C, E, CLK, ML, S, SL, SLK and G-Class applications
Bosch ME9.7 / MED9.7 M272 / M273 / selected M156 C300/C350, E350, CLK350, CLS, S-Class, ML350, GL450, R-Class, SL/SLK and related AMG applications
Selected Bosch MED17.7 M270 / M274 / M276 / M278 / M157 Selected C, E, CLS, S, SL, GLK, ML/GLE, GL/GLS and AMG applications
Siemens SIM266 M266 Selected A-Class and B-Class applications
Siemens/Continental SIM271 M271 Selected C, E, CLK and SLK applications
Bosch EDC15 / EDC16 / selected EDC17 Mercedes CDI / BlueTEC diesel Selected passenger-car, SUV and Sprinter applications
Delphi CRD.11 / CRD2 / CRD3 Selected OM642 / OM651 Selected CDI, BlueTEC and Sprinter applications

This is representative rather than universal coverage. Later Bosch MG1/MD1, Continental EMS71, EIS/EZS, ESL/ELV, CPC, DSM, and transmission/VGS modules are not included in this standard ECU service.

How the mail-in service works

  1. Choose clone only or clone plus Stage 1 and complete checkout.
  2. For Stage 1, complete the PCM Tuners service request with the vehicle, fuel, and calibration details.
  3. Pack the original and matching donor securely so the modules cannot touch or slide. Include your order number, VIN, year, model, and engine.
  4. Ship both modules to:
    PCM Tuners
    367 N Clarendon Ave, Unit 7
    [YOUR ORDER NUMBER]
    Scottdale, GA 30079
  5. We select the correct access method, preserve the original read, program the donor, read it back, power-cycle it, and verify bench communication.
  6. We return both modules with tracking. Typical shop turnaround is 1-3 business days after arrival.

Bench, boot, and BDM are included

Some Mercedes ECUs can be fully accessed through the external connector. Others require the case to be opened for boot or BDM access to the internal memories. The customer does not need to choose the method, and there is no ordinary boot-work surcharge. Opened controllers are photographed and carefully resealed before return.

When the original ECU does not communicate

An ECU that will not communicate in the vehicle may still contain recoverable data. Cloning becomes impossible only when the required data cannot be recovered from the original. Water damage, electrical damage, corrupted memory, previous programming or repair attempts, and physically damaged circuit boards can stop recovery. A wrong, damaged, or unreadable donor can also prevent completion.

If you followed the published matching rule and we determine that the ECU family is unsupported, the service price is refunded. If the supplied original or donor is mismatched, damaged, previously altered, or physically unreadable, PCM Tuners retains $99 for evaluation and tracked standard US return shipping and refunds the balance. Extended recovery is never added without approval.

90-day clone verification guarantee

Every completed donor is read back, power-cycled, and checked for bench communication before shipment. If our transferred data does not verify correctly, we will repeat the cloning work at no charge. The guarantee covers PCM Tuners’ data-transfer work; it does not cover vehicle diagnosis, wiring faults, shipping damage, or hardware failure in either customer-supplied module.

Important limitations

  • Cloning copies recoverable data; it does not diagnose the vehicle or repair failed electronics.
  • The original ECU must contain readable data for this standard one-to-one clone service.
  • A customer-supplied donor is checked for identification, programming, and bench communication, but its electronics are not remanufactured or given a hardware warranty.
  • Stage 1 is for a mechanically sound vehicle with stock engine and emissions hardware. It does not repair active faults or mechanical problems.
  • No emissions defeat, EIS/EZS, ESL/ELV, TCU/VGS, CPC, DSM, key programming, virginizing, or SCN coding is bundled into this product.
  • Proof of ownership or authorization may be requested for theft-relevant work.

Need us to locate the donor?

Customer-supplied donors are the normal path. If you want PCM Tuners to locate one, request a sourced-donor quote using a clear photograph of the original label. The quote includes the donor, sourcing and bench verification, cloning, and return shipping. Do not purchase the customer-supplied-donor option first.
